Does Pandora have real diamonds?
With the announcement of the new Pandora Brilliance Collection on May 4, 2021, many questions have been raised regarding lab-created diamonds.
Yes, we know diamonds are forever, and with Pandora’s claim that they will use lab-created diamonds, does that really mean diamonds are for everyone?
The simple answer is yes, lab-created diamonds have the same optical, physical, and chemical properties as mined diamonds. In this post, we take a look at 10 reasons why lab-created diamonds are the best choice ethically, environmentally, and for your wallet.

Until May 4, 2021, all Pandora diamonds were mined from diamond mines. From Pandora Brilliant onwards, all newly released diamond jewelry will feature lab-created diamonds.

1) Lab-created diamonds are essentially the same as lab-mined diamonds.

Sphera’s carbon neutral assessment identifies greenhouse gas emissions (GHG emissions) as the main potential environmental impact in the value chain of lab-created diamonds. This is due to the amount of energy used in growing lab-created diamonds, including the use of raw materials such as high purity methane gas and hydrogen. Lab-created Pandora diamonds are CarbonNeutral® certified products under the CarbonNeutral Protocol, the world’s leading standard for carbon neutrality. To achieve Pandora’s CarbonNeutral® product certification, Pandora is working with leading carbon neutrality and climate finance experts, Natural Capital Partners.
To date, the lab-created diamonds in the Pandora collection are, on average, grown using over 60% renewable energy sources, and greenhouse gas emissions from non-renewable energy sources are offset by our CarbonNeutral® product certification. Next year, when Pandora launches the collection worldwide, diamonds are expected to be produced using 100% renewable energy.
In addition to the CarbonNeutral® product certification for lab-created sustainable diamonds, Pandora has received a CarbonNeutral® product certification for the entire Pandora collection, including, for example, all Pandora Brilliants and their packaging. To achieve CarbonNeutral® certification, Pandora is supporting a carbon finance project that offsets any remaining carbon emissions.
5) Lab-created diamonds are not the same as synthetic or “fake” diamonds.

6) Pandora Brilliance is created using chemical vapor deposition (CVD).
Lab diamonds are man-made using one of two processes: HPHT and CVD.

7) Lab-created diamonds go through the same three-step process as mined diamonds.
The creation of sustainable lab-created diamonds follows three major production steps referred to as the value chain for lab-created diamonds. This value chain begins with the extraction of raw materials to generate gases used for the CVD process, which results in laboratory rough diamonds that are then cut and polished, ready to be hand-set into Pandora jewelry. The cutting and polishing stage is similar to the cutting and polishing of mined diamonds. The three main production steps are shown in the figure above.
8) In 2018, De Beers changed the diamond market by opening a diamond lab in the UK.
Lightbox Jewelry was launched in 2018 and, leveraging the technology expertise of De Beers Element Six business, provides consumers with lab-grown diamonds at an affordable price.
A De Beers lightbox states: “Lab-grown diamonds have an identical chemical composition to natural diamonds, both of which are pure carbon in cubic crystalline form. The difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds is how they are shaped. Natural diamonds take millions of years to form underground, while lab-grown diamonds can be created in a lab in a matter of weeks. Diamonds in lightboxes are grown to match the chemical properties of natural diamond, and the finished stone is optically identical.”
9) Sustainability
Community reforestation, East Africa
To offset the remaining carbon emissions, Pandora is supporting a community reforestation project in Kenya and Uganda, Community Reforestation, East Africa. The project organizes community-based tree planting initiatives involving over 12,000 small groups involving 90,000 farmers. According to traditional practice, farmers cut down trees to increase the availability of agricultural land, which reduces the quality of the soil by removing nutrients. Such forestry projects combine carbon sequestration with sustainable development, helping to improve the livelihoods of the population through education and training, and generating additional sources of income beyond smallholder farming. In addition, farmers are paid carbon finance for tree survival.
Key impacts of the project include:
- Climate Impact: Over 15 million trees have been planted to date and are alive, growing and being monitored by the project. Removing carbon from the atmosphere, reducing emissions to take urgent action to combat climate change.
- Training and Education: Nearly 50% of farmers increased their food supply through conservation agriculture training.
- Women’s Empowerment: Women make up 42% in small farming groups. Women are given access to leadership training and teams are encouraged to use a rotational leadership structure. This allows women to take on managerial responsibilities that they may not have had before. The project is designed in accordance with the Verified Carbon Standard, the world’s leading voluntary greenhouse gas emission program.
10) Lab-created diamonds break the mining monopoly!
Diamonds are the cartels’ best friends. De Beers’ centennial sovereignty over diamonds has been hailed as one of the most visible monopolies in history. Founded in 1888 by British tycoon Cecil Rhodes, De Beers capitalized on supply and demand for mined diamonds through a series of antitrust measures that included persuading other producers to join a price-setting cartel and curbing non-cooperating producers.
Lab-grown diamonds have been around for over sixty years, with little impact on the diamond cartel. Things have changed in recent years thanks to cutting-edge technology and consumer emphasis on ethically sourced, eco-friendly, eco-friendly luxury jewelry.
